Our State Parks are in trouble. As of this writing, 67 66 65 Parks will be closed in 2012. While 70 were slated to be closed three parks will be be taken over -temporarily- by the National Park Service. Another will be funded by a non-profit organization. Two of the ‘saved parks’ are in the Bay Area. So six of the parks to be closed are in the Bay Area - as defined by the California State Parks website. Several more are close to the Bay Area. The purpose of Protect Our Parks is to motivate YOU to get involved and stop the closures.
The State Parks total budget(proposed) is $119 million. That’s with $11 million cut for the coming year with $22 million cut over the next two budget cycles. $119 million is less that 0.1% of the total budget. Or, to put it yet another way, $22 million represents how much the state government spends in two hours. Read, it’s not much of the state budget.
The only way we can change this is to change their minds or raise the money some way. Protect Our Parks will try to give you the information you need to get involved. Click on News to get started now.
